Competency Based Language Teaching

Background
Competency based language teaching is an application of the principles of competency based education to language teaching. CBLT is an educational movement that focuses on outcomes or output of learning. Competency based language teaching emerged in the united states in 1970. Develop the knowlege, skills, and behaviours of students. Widely used in 1980s.

The Goal of Competency Based Language Teaching
ž CBLT is to enable students to become autonomous individuals.
ž CBLT will improve the quality assessment
ž CBLT will improve the student learning by the clear specification.
ž CBLT teaches language as a function of communication.

Competency Based Language Teaching Strategies
ž Raising awarnes of the strategies learning are already using.
ž Presenting and modelling strategies.
ž Providing multiple practice opportunities.
ž Getting learners to evaluate the effectiveness of the strategies used.

Advantages
ž Students focus on something or language that will be useful for them once they face the situation.
ž The student builds up self-confidence.

Disadvadtange
ž The focus of a competency could not be interesting for learners, especially if we consider the ages and personal background.
ž Limited support teachers have to create a competence based lesson with much more relia.
